Private Nikko Tours — Full Days in the Mountains, Hosted by a Local

Most Nikko day tours start in Tokyo, run on a coach timetable, and march a crowd through the shrine circuit. This is the opposite of that. Earth Hostel Nikko Riverhouse runs private, full-day tours for your group alone — up to 9 people, one vehicle, no strangers, no fixed script. We live here, in the mountains of Nikko, so the day goes at your pace and reaches the places the coaches skip: the lake, the waterfalls, the plateau, the forest, and the quiet swimming holes along the river. It is Nikko the way a local would show you.

What Makes This Different

The Nikko tours you find on the big booking sites almost all run out of Tokyo. That means two hours on a bus before the day even starts, a fixed route built around the famous shrines, and a group of strangers you did not choose. They are not bad — they are just built for volume, not for you.

We start here, in Nikko, because we live here. There is no commute to burn through, no coach manifest to keep to, and no one else in the vehicle. We know which waterfall is running hardest this week, where the plateau is quietest, and which bend of the river is best for a swim. The day is shaped around what your group wants to do, and it can change as the day unfolds. That is the whole point of going private and local.

What to Expect

Unrushed. That is the single word for it. This is not a tour that counts minutes at each stop and herds you back to the bus. We go at the pace of the group — long enough at the lake to actually take it in, time to walk a stretch of the plateau if you want to, a proper stop for lunch rather than a rushed one. If the group wants to linger somewhere beautiful, we linger. If you would rather see one more place than spend longer at the last, we do that instead.

The focus is nature first. Nikko’s shrines are extraordinary and we can absolutely include them — but the parts of Nikko that stay with people are usually the mountain ones: the colour of Lake Chuzenji under the peaks, the sound of Kegon Falls, the marshland of Senjogahara, the forest. We build the day around those, with the cultural sights woven in as you like.

Where We Go

Every tour is private and flexible, so nothing here is fixed — but these are the places a full day in Nikko is usually built around:

  • Lake Chuzenji. A high mountain lake at 1,269m, ringed by peaks, formed by an eruption of Mount Nantai thousands of years ago. Still, vast, and at its most spectacular in autumn.
  • Kegon Falls. One of Japan’s most famous waterfalls — a near-100-metre drop fed by Lake Chuzenji. Dramatic in every season, thunderous after rain, framed by foliage in October.
  • Senjogahara Plateau. A high marshland plateau with boardwalk trails, open skies, and a completely different landscape from the forested valleys below. Easy walking, big views.
  • Waterfalls of the valley. Beyond Kegon — Ryuzu, Yutaki, and others — each with its own character, most just off the road.
  • The Toshogu Shrine complex. Included on request — the gilded, ornate heart of cultural Nikko, a UNESCO World Heritage Site. Best woven in as one element of the day rather than the whole of it.
  • River swimming holes. Our signature. See below.

End the Day in the River

This is the part no Tokyo-based tour can offer. Earth Hostel sits directly on the Kurokawa River, and the mountains around Nikko are full of clear, cold swimming holes that almost no visitors ever find. After a full day of mountains and waterfalls, there is nothing better than finishing in the water — a swim in the river to wash off the day before we drop you back. In summer the river holds a refreshing 22–24°C even when the air is in the high 30s. For groups who want it, the swim becomes the best memory of the whole day.

Bring a swimsuit and a towel if this appeals — and let us know when you book so we can plan the route to finish at the water.

Pricing

One private tour, your group only, for a flat full-day price. The rate depends on group size and vehicle:

  • Car tour — up to 4 passengers: ¥54,000 for the full day. The car seats three comfortably, with a fourth seat that suits a child or an adult happy with a snug middle seat over a long day.
  • Van tour — 5 to 9 passengers: ¥72,000 for the full day. Room to spread out.

The price is for the whole tour, not per person — so the more of you there are, the better the value. A group of nine in the van works out at ¥8,000 each for a full private day in the mountains of Nikko. Entry fees (such as the Toshogu Shrine complex), meals, and any optional extras are not included.

Best Time of Year

Tours run spring to late autumn. Each season offers something distinct: cherry blossom and fresh green in spring, river swimming and full waterfalls through summer, and Nikko’s famous koyo foliage in October — when Lake Chuzenji and the plateau are at their most spectacular and the whole region turns colour. Autumn is the most popular window, so book ahead for October dates.

Frequently Asked Questions

Do I need to stay at Earth Hostel to book a tour?

No. These tours are open to everyone — you do not need to be staying at the hostel. The tour is a standalone private day experience. (If you are staying with us as a hostel guest, we also offer a separate self-guided shuttle service — ask us about it.)

How much does a tour cost?

It is a flat price for the whole private tour: ¥54,000 for up to 4 people (car) and ¥72,000 for 5 to 9 people (van), for a full day. The price is for the group, not per person, so larger groups get better value per head. Entry fees, meals, and optional extras are not included.

Will we be in a car or a van?

Groups of up to four travel by car — it seats four passengers, with the fourth seat best suited to a child or an adult happy with a snug middle seat (your driver takes the fifth seat). Groups of five to nine travel by van, with room to spread out. You will book the option that matches your group size below.

Where do you pick us up?

Pickup and drop-off are included. We can collect your group from Nikko (JR Nikko or Tobu Nikko Station) or a Nikko-area accommodation. Let us know your location when you book and we will confirm the pickup point and time.

Is the tour guided?

You will have a local host driving and showing you around — pointing out the best spots, sharing what is good this week, and shaping the day around your group. It is relaxed local hosting rather than a formal lecture-style guide. For any serious hiking you would head off on your own; the tour itself is about seeing the highlights of Nikko at your own pace.

Can we really swim in the river?

Yes — in season, and conditions permitting. The Kurokawa River and the swimming holes around Nikko are clear and cold, and a swim is one of the best ways to end a summer tour. The river holds a refreshing 22–24°C in summer. Bring a swimsuit and towel, and tell us when you book so we can plan to finish at the water.

What should we bring?

Comfortable shoes for walking, weather-appropriate layers (mountain weather shifts), water, and a swimsuit and towel if you want to swim. Cash for entry fees and lunch. That is about it — we handle the rest.

Can you include the Toshogu shrines?

Yes. The Toshogu Shrine complex can be part of your day if you would like — just tell us when you book. We will build it in alongside the natural highlights. Shrine entry fees are not included in the tour price.
