Private Celebrations Venue — Nikko, Japan
Some occasions deserve more than a restaurant private room or a hotel function space. Earth Hostel Nikko Riverhouse is a private venue in the mountains of Nikko — on the Kurokawa River, surrounded by cedar forest, with no neighboring properties and no shared bookings. Birthdays, reunions, graduations, anniversaries, farewell parties — whatever the occasion, the venue is entirely yours. Music is welcome. The river is right there. From ¥4,500 per person per night.

A Venue That Gets Out of the Way
The best private venues do not compete with the occasion — they frame it. Earth Hostel is in Okorogawa village, deep enough in the mountains of Nikko that the setting does the heavy lifting. The Kurokawa River runs along the property. Cedar forest surrounds the village. There are no neighboring properties, which means no noise restrictions, no hard finish time, and no one to manage except your own guests.
Exclusively yours means exclusively yours. No other guests check in during your booking, no strangers pass through, no background hostel activity running alongside your celebration. The property belongs to your group from arrival to checkout.
Celebrations That Work Here
- Milestone birthdays. 30th, 40th, 50th — a celebration that goes beyond dinner. Music, the river, a night in the mountains, and a morning after worth remembering.
- Reunions. Family groups or old friends taking over a venue together — dorms, common space, outdoor area, day trips to Nikko’s temples and mountains built in.
- Graduation and farewell parties. The end of something significant, marked somewhere that feels significant. Music welcome, late finish possible.
- Bachelorette and bachelor parties. Private, outdoor, no neighbours. Far enough from the city to feel like a proper escape, close enough that getting here is not a project.
- Anniversaries. A private retreat for a couple or a small group — dinner, music optional, river in the morning, the kind of evening that does not happen at a hotel.
- Retirement celebrations. A proper send-off in a place worth going to, with the people who matter, no venue curfew, and Nikko’s mountains on the doorstep.
Music and Entertainment
There are no noise restrictions at Earth Hostel and no curfew. Music festivals and DJ events have been hosted here before — if your celebration wants a sound system or live music running late on the riverbank, that is entirely possible. See the music festivals and DJ events page for more on what has been hosted here.
Accommodation
The hostel sleeps 26 across four rooms: a 10-bed dorm, an 8-bed dorm, and two annex rooms of up to 4 each. For celebrations where some guests want more privacy — couples, family members who prefer not to share a dorm — the annex rooms work as semi-private space. The common room converts to sleeping for 8 more, and on-site camping and RV pitches extend capacity for larger groups or guests who prefer being outside.
The shared, informal setup tends to suit celebrations well — everyone in one place, the party carrying naturally from the afternoon into the evening into the morning after.
Nikko as a Destination
Building a celebration around a place worth visiting makes the occasion more memorable. Nikko is one of the most visited destinations in Japan — the Toshogu Shrine complex, the mountain temples, Lake Chuzenji, the Kegon Falls, and national park hiking trails are all accessible by shuttle from Earth Hostel. A birthday or reunion weekend here is not just a party — it is a trip, with the celebration at its centre and Nikko’s mountains as the wider context.
Pricing
From ¥4,500 per person per night. Minimum charge: 18 persons (¥81,000 per night), regardless of actual headcount below 18. Groups of 18 and above pay per actual headcount. A small premium applies during Japanese public holidays and peak season dates. Camping and RV pitches are priced separately.
Best Time of Year
Cherry blossom in April makes for a setting that photographs itself. Summer brings long warm evenings perfect for outdoor parties and late nights by the river. Autumn — October especially — is when Nikko’s koyo foliage peaks, and the forest becomes a backdrop that cannot be replicated. For milestone occasions tied to a specific date, the venue is open spring to late autumn and every season has something to offer.
| Season | Conditions | Good for |
|---|---|---|
| Spring (April – May) | Cherry blossom, cool, fresh green | Milestone birthdays, intimate gatherings, anniversaries |
| Early summer (June) | Warm, fireflies, river running | Evening parties, outdoor celebrations, bachelorette weekends |
| Summer (July – August) | Warm to hot, river swimming, long evenings | All celebration types — river, music, late nights |
| Autumn (September – October) | Mild, dry, koyo foliage from October | Reunions, milestone birthdays — peak photography conditions |
| Late autumn (November) | Cool, quiet, final foliage | Intimate celebrations, small groups |
Getting Here
From Tokyo, the Tobu Limited Express from Asakusa to Tobu Nikko Station takes around 2 hours — manageable for guests coming from the city, and straightforward for international guests arriving via Narita or Haneda. Earth Hostel runs a shuttle from JR Nikko and Tobu Nikko Stations. For guests arriving by car, on-site parking is available. See the access page for full transport details.
Frequently Asked Questions
Can I have a DJ or live music at my celebration?
Yes. There are no neighboring properties and no noise curfew at Earth Hostel. Music festivals and DJ events have been hosted here. If your celebration includes a sound system or live performance, include it in your enquiry and we can discuss setup and power requirements.
Can I bring a caterer or outside food and drink?
Yes — catering is not included by default. Bringing your own caterer or arranging your own food and drink is the standard approach for celebrations. Include your catering plans in the enquiry and we can discuss kitchen access and logistics.
Is the venue suitable for families with children?
Yes, with the usual care around the river. The Kurokawa River runs directly along the property — it is one of the best features of the venue, and it requires supervision for young children as with any natural waterway. The venue itself is well suited to multi-generational groups.
What is the minimum number of guests?
The minimum charge is equivalent to 18 persons at ¥4,500 per night — ¥81,000 per night regardless of actual headcount below 18. If your group is smaller than 18, you still pay for 18 beds and have the full venue exclusively. Groups of 18 and above pay per actual headcount.
How far in advance should I book?
As early as possible, particularly for peak dates — cherry blossom (April), summer weekends (July and August), and autumn foliage (October) fill up early. For milestone occasions tied to a specific date, enquiring six months or more in advance is recommended.
Can guests do day trips to Nikko’s temples and shrines?
Yes. Earth Hostel runs a shuttle to JR Nikko and Tobu Nikko Stations, from where the Toshogu Shrine complex, Lake Chuzenji, and the Kegon Falls are accessible by bus. Building a day trip into a celebration weekend is straightforward and adds a memorable dimension for guests visiting Nikko for the first time.
