Open Air Lounge
Eat. Gather. Listen to the river.
Earth Hostel was built around a simple idea — that the best moments of travel happen when you slow down, step outside, and share a meal with a stranger who becomes a friend. The Open Air Lounge is where that idea comes alive.
Where Nature Becomes Your Dining Room

Perched just upstream from the main building and tucked away from the road, the Open Air Lounge sits directly beside Black River — a crystal-clear mountain stream that tumbles down from the southern highlands of Nikko. You can hear the water from every seat. In summer, the air is cool with river mist. At night, the stars above the gorge are extraordinary.
This isn’t a hotel terrace or a concrete courtyard. It’s a wooden pavilion built into the forest — trees overhead, river below, mountains in every direction. A staircase leads straight down to the riverbank, where guests swim, sit on the rocks, and let the current carry the day away.
A Place to Eat Together
One of the most cherished parts of staying at Earth Hostel is the shared meal. The lounge is the heart of that experience — a communal table where guests from all over the world sit down together, plates filled with vegetarian and vegan food cooked fresh in our kitchen. No packaged hostel breakfasts. Real food, made with care, eaten outdoors with the river as the soundtrack.
Breakfast
Wake up, step outside, and sit down to a homemade breakfast. We alternate daily between fluffy pancakes and golden French toast — both served until 9:00 AM. Simple, nourishing, and the perfect way to start a day of exploring Nikko.
Lunch/Dinner
Lunch and Dinner are available when reserved in advance — a warm, freshly prepared meal served at the lounge as dusk falls over the valley. Eating here while the river glows in the fading light is one of those moments that stays with you long after you leave Japan.
Socialise, Relax, Stay a While
There is no curfew at Earth Hostel. The lounge never closes. After dinner it becomes something else entirely — a place to talk, to share stories from the road, to watch the stars emerge above the valley. Some nights it is just two travelers sitting quietly by the water. Other nights it is a full celebration.
Solo travelers often find their travel companions here. Groups of friends book the lounge for private events and gatherings. The space holds all of it — there is something about being beside a river at night in the mountains of Japan that makes people open up.

No souvenir shops. No city lights. Just stars, trees, mountains — and a beautiful river flowing past your table.
The River at Your Feet
From the lounge, a staircase descends directly to Black River. In summer, guests swim in the cold, clear mountain water, dry off on the rocks, and climb back up for a cold drink. The river is no more than seven meters away — close enough to hear every ripple, close enough to feel the cool air rising off the current. This is what makes Earth Hostel different. You are not near nature. You are in it.
Events & Private Gatherings
The Open Air Lounge is available for private events, parties, and gatherings. With its natural setting beside the river and its separation from the main building, it is perfect for small celebrations, music evenings, or group dinners under the stars. Get in touch and we will help you make something special happen here.
